More details on Matt Thiessen and Jack's Mannequin song collaboration

Absolute Punk have posted a new interview with Andrew McMahon. When asked about writing some songs for the new record with Matt Thiessen, Andrew revealed details about their song writing process, the names of the songs they've written and why they're his favourites so far. The new Jack's Mannequin record is stated for a spring or summer 2011 release. Read the interview and hear one of the songs "Platform Fire" after the jump.

I also remember hearing earlier this year that you wrote a couple songs with Matt Thiessen. Did anything come of those ones?
Yeah. Matt and I have been buddies for a number of years. I sort of hit this moment where you write songs for a long time, you write in a certain way, you know, writing's a habitual thing to some extent. I hit this moment where I was, like, "What would it be like to write with other people?" Granted the last thing I wanted to do is what a lot of artists do, which is go find some kind of hitmaker and go let them make your songs so you can have radio singles or whatever. That felt like a disingenuous thing to do, whereas I've always respected Matt and we've always been close friends. I was, like, "Why don't you and me try and go write a couple of songs and see what happens?"
So we had these super-inspired days down in Tennessee at his house and wrote a song day for, like, three days down there. I think at least two or three of the songs that we've written together over the course of the past year will end up on this record. Truthfully, a couple of them are my favorite things that I've done so far for the record. I think we got in a flow, whereas sometimes you'll overthink your writing, having somebody else there inside of the song to quickly go, "No, no. Let's go in this direction." We were really nimble, and I think we wrote a couple of great songs.
One of them is called "ADI," which is quickly becoming one of my favorites for the record. There's another one called "People Running." We haven't yet tackled it in the studio, but I'm pretty hopeful that it's going to happen. Then there's another tune, "Platform Fire," which I shot off randomly at a little charity event I did recently. It's not necessarily the best version of it but I wanted to give a taste of what was up, and that was another one we had worked on together back at my house in Los Angeles. That was a lot of fun, those sessions, for sure.

I totally agree with Yaara, his word about the release date is probably not too accurate, considering the supposed release dates for the other CDs. However, I am totally stoked to see the final product of the Matt/Andrew collaboration! Long Live JM!! :)

Don't take Andrew's word about the release. It changes. Knowing Andrew, if he's saying "spring/summer", it'll be out in the fall.
